Happy Fasnacht Day!Posted: February 16, 2010
Okay, I don’t know if you say “Happy Fasnacht Day.” This is a new day of celebration for me, but one of which my husband has fond childhood memories. After seeing something on the news about Fasnacht this morning, I turned to the internet to learn more. From Wikipedia, “A Fasnacht, sometimes spelled Fastnacht or Faschnacht, is a fatty doughnut treat served traditionally on Fastnacht Day (Shrove Tuesday), the day before Lent starts. Fasnachts were made as a way to empty the pantry of lard, sugar, fat, and butter, which were traditionally fasted from during Lent. Basel, Switzerland conducts an annual fasnacht festival. The Pennsylvanian Dutch territory surrounding Lancaster, Pennsylvania, celebrates the custom as well.” So there you go. My husband told me as a child, his mother along with all his aunts would get together on this day and make donuts. Sounds like a reason to celebrate to me.
